UK 5G Coverage in 2025: Where Are We Now?

Coverage data referenced in this article is based on publicly available information from network operators and Ofcom. Coverage varies significantly by precise location; always check the relevant network's own coverage checker before making a decision.

The State of UK 5G

5G has been commercially available in the UK since 2019. Six years on, coverage has expanded significantly in major cities, but the rollout remains uneven — with some areas having multiple competing 5G networks, and large parts of the UK (particularly rural areas) still dependent on 4G.

Network-by-Network Overview

EE

EE claims 5G coverage in over 160 towns and cities across the UK. As part of the BT Group, EE has access to substantial spectrum holdings and has been consistently cited as having among the best overall coverage of any UK network.

O2

O2's 5G network covers numerous major population centres and continues to expand. O2 has invested in mid-band spectrum, which offers a good balance of range and speed.

Vodafone

Vodafone's 5G rollout has accelerated significantly. The network covers most major UK cities and many large towns. Vodafone's access to spectrum assets and its planned investment as part of the Three merger may further accelerate coverage.

Three

Three UK has prioritised 5G and holds significant mmWave spectrum for ultra-high-speed urban 5G. In major cities, Three's 5G speeds can be among the fastest available. Broader geographic coverage expansion is ongoing.

The Rural Reality

For consumers outside major urban centres, the 5G picture is more cautious. While all networks are expanding, rural 5G coverage remains patchy. Many rural postcodes receive solid 4G but limited or no 5G service.

If you live or work in a rural area, coverage should be your primary consideration when comparing networks — not 5G availability. Our advice: check your specific postcode on each network's coverage checker before making a decision.

Does 5G Make a Difference?

For most everyday smartphone use — social media, messaging, web browsing — 4G is entirely sufficient. The real-world advantages of 5G become apparent when:

  • Downloading large files quickly
  • Streaming 4K video
  • Using your phone as a home broadband replacement (mobile broadband)
  • In very busy public locations where 4G can get congested

What to Look for in a 5G Plan

Not all "5G plans" are equal:

  • Is 5G access included, or an add-on? Most plans now include 5G at no extra cost if you're in a 5G area.
  • Is there a speed cap? Some budget unlimited plans throttle speeds. Check the fair use policy.
  • Does your device support 5G? 5G requires a compatible handset. Most devices launched since 2021 support 5G; check your phone's specifications.

Looking Ahead

The Vodafone-Three merger includes significant commitments to 5G investment, which its proponents argue will accelerate UK 5G rollout — particularly in areas currently underserved. Whether these commitments translate into materially better coverage for consumers will become clearer over the coming years.
